Penn
State scientists have conducted field research studies
on broadleaf weed control treatments, assessed numerous
herbicides, and developed improved Poa annua
management practices. They have also evaluated fungicide
uses for the most effective control of gray leaf spot,
dollar spot, and anthracnose. Researchers have also
studied product effectiveness and application techniques
for many insecticides.
Penn State is nationally recognized for training
generations of superintendents at leading golf courses
and clubs everywhere.
New funds will enable Penn State to hire needed new
staff, expand turfgrass research, offer more
scholarships to train new turfgrass professionals, and
build endowment for future needs.
Support from the PTC
has greatly improved turfgrass research and education at
Penn State. During 2004 alone, turfgrass scientists at
the Center have:
-
Conducted 55 field research studies covering 623
weed control treatments, including 122 for broadleaf
weed control.
-
Developed improved Poa annua management
practices.
Evaluated fungicide use for the most effective
control of gray leaf spot, dollar spot, and
anthracnose, among other turf diseases.
-
Assessed more than fifteen herbicides.
-
Studied product effectiveness and application
techniques for insecticides used for problem pests,
including black cutworm larvae, Japanese beetle
grubs, white grubs and bluegrass weevil.
PTC scholarships have helped educate scores of
students at Penn State in turfgrass management – trained
staff whose skills enhance our golf courses and add
value and enjoyment to our lawns and athletic fields.
Scientific advances have created new opportunities for
turfgrass research and education. Funds from
Pennsylvania Turfgrass Research Inc. will support new
advances at Penn State's Turfgrass program, including:
- New research: Additional staff, including
a turf physiologist, will enable Penn State
scientists to work with geneticists to develop new
strains of turfgrass with better resistance to
pests, weeds, and stresses. New funds will also
increase the Center's current scientists'
capacities. They will be able to develop and
evaluate more turfgrass products and management
techniques for the industry more quickly.
- Endowment: Creating endowment will help
stabilize and maintain resources needed to plan
future turfgrass programs and staff at Penn State.
- Scholarships: Everyone who enjoys golf or
a fine lawn benefits from the skills of turfgrass
professionals trained at outstanding programs such
as Penn State's. Funds will enable deserving
students to train at Penn State for future careers
in the turfgrass industry.
