"Growing the Game"
The Campaign

Pennsylvania Turfgrass Research, Inc. (PTRI) is a volunteer directed group founded by the Pennsylvania Turfgrass Council (PTC). Since 1955, the PTC has provided more than $2,000,000 to improve the turfgrass industry through support of research and education at Penn State University.  Penn State’s Center for Turfgrass Science is recognized as a national leader in the field and is a vital local resource for everyone who values attractive and well maintained turfgrass.

The Center for Turfgrass Science at Penn State now seeks to expand: to develop new techniques and products to advance the industry, to train the next generation of turfgrass managers, and to improve turfgrass to benefit golfers and other athletic users throughout the region. Yet traditional sources of funds – government support and PTC membership, tradeshow and golf outing income – must be supplemented to insure the future development of better turfgrass and the personnel and products needed for all of us to enjoy it. PTRI’s tax-exempt status as a 501.c.3 organization, means it can accept your tax-deductible contributions to support this work.

PTRI is conducting the ”Growing the Game” campaign with a goal to raise $1,000,000 over five-years. Over the long-term, contributions will enable PTRI to establish a multi-million dollar endowment that will provide a stable, reliable source of income to support the Center for Turfgrass Science for expanded turfgrass research and scholarship support.

To accomplish this, leading volunteers from PTRI will seek annual support from country clubs, businesses, and individuals associated with the industry; alumni of the Penn State program; and from golfers and other people who enjoy lawns, athletic fields and environmentally friendly landscapes.

Why you should care – the Benefits of PennState Research

  • Improve turfgrass quality, property values, and aesthetics by developing and evaluating products, applications and turf varieties to better resist weeds, insects, and stresses.  Penn State turfgrass varieties are the most widely used seed on golf courses worldwide.
  • Develop more environmentally friendly methods of maintaining turfgrass, using less water and reducing the use of chemicals and other materials.
  • Strengthen Penn State as a national resource for the turfgrass industry.
  • Ensure the highest quality, safer turfgrass for the enjoyment of recreational users: golfers and athletic field users such as soccer, football and baseball players.
  • Offer vendors research to evaluate and create new products and recognition of their support to better market their goods and services.
  • Control turfgrass maintenance costs through new research and expanded extension services.
  • Increase scholarship support to help attract and train deserving young people as a resource for Pennsylvania golf clubs, athletic fields, landscape companies and suppliers.
